My son is 5 weeks old and we are still struggling with sore nipples, bad latches, too much milk and now thrush. I saw a lactation consultant and have been going to a support group, (I live in NY), but there is nothing that can be done with the pain other than wait for the nipples to heal. I pumped for a while, but that just brought the supply up, it makes it impossible for my son to nurse unless I pump a little before each feeding. I bought Medela's nipple shields to nurse with, and there is a great relief, I'm not sure I'm using it right and there is a warning that it might hurt the milk supply. How do I go about using it?
היי אפרת, It is difficult to write in English but I will try. You should consult with your LC locally. Nipple sheilds are not usually recommended for sore nipples. They are used to transfer a baby who refuses the breast, gradually back to the breast after taking bottles only. Five weeks is a long time to suffer and the shields may prolong the pathology. I would recommend working with the LC to get off of them. Either way, they are recommended for temporary use only. Good luck.
